COD Softball splits with Seahawks, 5-0 & 16-3

COD (9-1) had a rough first game, being shutout for the first time this season, then responded in a big way by grabbing a five-inning mercy win in game two, as the Roadrunners split a home double header against the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks of Wilmington (3-5), 5-0 and 16-3.
The Roadrunners played against LA Harbor for the first time in program history in 1988 and hold a 3-9 overall record against the Seahawks. Before today, Desert last played the Seahawks in 2023, but had not defeated LA Harbor since 2015. Desert has a 2-5 record against the Seahawks in Palm Desert.
In game one, the Seahawks would jump out to an early lead, but freshman right-handed starting pitcher Alyssa Martinez Sanchez (La Quinta H.S.) would shut down LA Harbor for the next four innings. Unfortunately, the Desert offense could not break through, falling for the first time in 2025, 5-0. Freshman second baseman Mia Villalobos (Thermal Coachella Valley) went 2 for 4 out of the leadoff spot.
In game two, everyone wanted to see how the Roadrunners would respond in the face of adversity and Desert started slowly, then came out swinging, scoring seven runs in the 2nd and eight runs in the 3rd to hammer the Seahawks into a mercy win, 16-3. Villalobos went 2 for 3 with a season high 6 runs batted in and sophomore first baseman Rebecca Perez (Palm Springs H.S.) tied a season high by going 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Arissa Gonzalez (Thermal Coachella Valley) went 2 for 4 from the plate and tossed a complete game. Freshman third baseman Sidney Sherrod (Palm Desert H.S.) went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and Martinez Sanchez went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Sophomore catcher Jaylene Ramos (Yucca Valley H.S.) went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs in the win.
The next 7 games are on the road for Desert, with the Roadrunners traveling for almost a month. The match-up for the Roadrunners will be on the road Friday, February 21 at 12p and 2:30p as they travel to the Antelope Valley Marauders of Lancaster (8-2). The Roadrunners played against Los Angeles Valley for the first time in program history in 1988 and hold a 10-36 overall record against the Marauders. Desert has not played the Marauders since 2017, and has not defeated Antelope Valley since 2013. Desert has a 5-15 record against the Marauders in Lancaster. The next home match-up for the Roadrunners will be on Wednesday, February 12 at 6p as they continue Inland Empire Athletic Conference play by hosting the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (1-7). The Roadrunners played against San Bernardino Valley for the first time in program history in 1981, back when they were named the Indians, and hold a 43-33 overall record against the Wolverines. Desert has a 23-15 record against the Wolverines in Palm Desert.
