COD Softball splits with Eagles, 7-3 & 11-6

COD (12-5) had a rough first game, where opportunities to stack hits never materialized and then held on for a hard-fought win in game two, as the Roadrunners split a home double header against the Los Angeles Mission Eagles of Sylmar (5-13), 7-3 and 11-6.

The Roadrunners played against LA Mission for the first time in program history in 2003 and hold a 6-1 overall record against the Eagles. Before today, Desert last played the Eagles in 2007, which was also the last time the Roadrunners had defeated LA Mission. Desert had never hosted the Eagles in Palm Desert prior to today.

The biggest story leading into today's contest was that sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Victoria Talamantes (La Quinta H.S.), was one strikeout away from reaching the 100-strikeout milestone. She achieved that milestone in the top of the first of game one of today's double header. Striking out freshman right fielder Adriana Hernandez (Pacoima San Fernando) who was batting in the five hole, the strikeout swinging was the second out in the inning.

Sophomore short stop Rebecca Perez (Palm Springs H.S.) went 2 for 3 in game one and went 2 for 4 with a run scored and 2 runs batted in, all out of the 2 hole in the lineup. Sophomore right fielder Cadence Krisell (Blythe Palo Verde Valley) went 1 for 4 in game one hitting out of the 5 hole and 2 for 4 in game two while hitting out of the 7 hole in the lineup.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on the road Friday, March 7 at 12p and 2:30p as they travel to the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest (2-15) to open up Inland Empire Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners played against Cerro Coso for the first time in program history in 2001 and hold a 16-0 overall record against the Coyotes. Desert has a 5-0 record against the Coyotes in Ridgecrest. The next home match-up for the Roadrunners will be on Wednesday, March 12 at 6p as they continue Inland Empire Athletic Conference play by hosting the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (3-12). The Roadrunners played against San Bernardino Valley for the first time in program history in 1981, back when they were named the Indians, and hold a 43-33 overall record against the Wolverines. Desert has a 23-15 record against the Wolverines in Palm Desert.
