COD Women’s Basketball rolls in home opening win over Tartars, 74-42

COD (2-9) had to wait 50 days for a home game and it was worth it as the Roadrunners dominated from beginning to end in a lopsided win over the Compton Tartars (1-12), 74-42.

Desert would hit back-to-back 3-point shots by leading scorer freshman starting guard Giovanna Espinoza (La Quinta H.S.) early in the first quarter and never looked back, building as much as a 33-point lead early in the 4th quarter.

Espinoza led all scorers with her 6th 25+ point game of the season, scoring 29 points, on 12 of 23 shooting, including her 5th game of 5 or more 3-pointers, going 5 of 14 from 3-point range, grabbing 9 steals. Freshman starting guard Audrey Tijerina (La Quinta H.S.) had her 5th 20+ point game of the season, with 22 points on 8 of 23 shooting, hitting her 2nd most 3-pointers of the season, going 6 of 18 from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) had 10 points on 4 of 9 shooting and sophomore starting guard Esperanza Figueroa (Thermal Coachella Valley) missed a double-double by an assist, dishing out 9 and scoring 10 points on 4 of 16 shooting. Freshman forward Amia Johnson (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 13 total rebounds, 8 of which were defensive.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on Saturday, January 4 at 1p as they travel to the Barstow Vikings (1-11). Desert has not defeated Barstow since February 19, 2014.
