COD Women’s Basketball sinks the Vikings, 65-46

COD (5-15; 3-7) tied their best record in 5 years, but the victory celebration was dampened as they lost a player due to injury with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, but still managed to hold on, as the Roadrunners pushed past the hapless Barstow Vikings (1-21; 0-10), 65-46.

Desert would finish the final 12 minutes of the game with only four players as freshman guard Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) suffered a wrist injury with 2:07 left in the 3rd quarter.

Sophomore starting guard Esperanza Figueroa (Thermal Coachella Valley) had a career high 28 points and a career high 8 3-point shots in the win, going 9 for 19 from the field and 8 of 14 from beyond 3-point range, also leading the team in rebounds with 9. Freshman starting guard Giovanna Espinoza (La Quinta H.S.) added 19 points on 7 of 32 shooting including going 3 of 17 from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) added 9 points on 3 of 13 shooting, tying a season high 10 assists and freshman guard Dominique Moreno (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) collected 9 steals in the win.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on Wednesday, February 5 at 5p as they travel to the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles. The next home game will be on Wednesday, February 12 at 5p when the Roadrunners host the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest in the "Looney Tunes Cup" match-up.
