Late Runs Doom Baseball in Loss to Palomar

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Entering the eighth inning with a 4-1 lead, College of the Desert (2-3) baseball surrendered five runs that enabled visiting Palomar to escape with a 6-4 victory Thursday evening in Palm Desert.

Sophomore third baseman Tanner Olthoff (Oceanside, CA/El Camino HS) got the Roadrunner offense going in the first, as he drew an RBI walk that would score sophomore left fielder Dax Roerig (Oceanside, CA/El Camino HS).

Tied 1-1 in the game's fifth inning, Olthoff led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second base when sophomore shortstop Sean Romo (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS) was hit by a pitch.  After a wild pitch advanced both runners, sophomore center fielder Dallas Asuncion (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS) singled in Olthoff.  Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Dalton Bidon (Enumclaw, WA/Enumclaw HS) plated Romo with a bunt back to the pitcher.

Tanner Olthoff led the Desert offense with two hits, two runs and an RBI, while Dalton Bidon picked up one hit and two RBIs.  Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jumpei Akanuma (Japan/Ritsumeikan) threw eight strong innings for the Roadrunners, allowing just one unearned run on five hits.  He struck out seven and walked two.

College of the Desert will be back in the action tomorrow afternoon for a 12 p.m. game against Cypress.
