Baseball Comes Up Short in 6-2 Home Defeat to Cerro Coso

PALM DESERT, Calif.  -- College of the Desert baseball (2-11, 0-3) opened with an early 2-1 lead, but sputtered late in a 6-2 home loss to visiting Foothill foe Cerro Coso on Thursday afternoon in Palm Desert.

After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Roadrunners answered back with a pair of first-inning runs to take a 2-1 lead.  Sophomore right fielder Tanner Olthoff (Oceanside, CA/El Camino HS) reached after being hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore shortstop Sean Romo (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS).  Sophomore designated hitter DJ Hernandez (La Quinta, CA/La Quinta HS) drove in Olthoff with a single, then scored on an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Cole Danielson (Cathedraly City, CA/Cathedral City).  

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Dallas Asuncion (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS) kept the Cerro Coso bats at bay until the game's sixth inning, when two runs gave the visitors  the lead for good.  Asuncion (0-1) finished with 6.2 innings of work, allowing four runs and four walks on seven hits.

DJ Hernandez led the Roadrunner offense with three hits and one RBI, while Cole Danielson finished 1-3 with a double and an RBI.  Sophomore first baseman Luc Powers-Hubbard (Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) went 1-3 with a double, while Tanner Olthoff and freshman left fielder Travis Tanaka (Honolulu, HI/St. Louis HS) each collected one hit,

College of the Desert baseball will travel to Chaffey this Saturday afternoon for a Foothill Conference matchup.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
