Baseball Relinquishes Early Lead in 9-5 Defeat at Chaffey

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. -- A two-RBI triple from sophomore first baseman Luc Powers-Hubbard (Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) helped give College of the Desert baseball (2-12, 0-4) a 3-1 lead in the game's second inning, but the Roadrunners could not hold on as Chaffey stormed back for a 9-5 Foothill Conference win last Saturday afternoon in Rancho Cucamonga.  

Sophomore third baseman Cole Danielson (Cathedral City, CA/Cathedral City HS) opened the second inning by reaching via an error, and advanced to third base when freshman designated hitter Travis Tanaka (Honolulu, HI/St. Louis HS) grounded out to second base. Freshman second baseman Louie Castellanos (Cathedral City, CA/Cathedral City HS) was then hit by a pitch, with both runners coming in to score on the Powers-Hubbard triple.  Freshman shortstop Isaiah Kinder (Yucca Valley, CA/Yucca Valley HS) followed with an RBI single of his own, granting the 3-1 Roadrunner advantage.  

Chaffey answered back with eight runs off Desert right-handed pitcher, sophomore Jumpei Akanuma (Japan/Ritsumeikan HS), over the next four innings, on their way to a 9-5 final.  Akanuma (1-4) surrendered nine runs on 10 hits through five innings of work, while striking out three and walking one.

Sophomore left fielder Tanner Olthoff (Oceanside, CA/El Camino HS) went 1-4 with an RBI, while Travis Tanaka went 1-5 and was the fourth Roadrunner to record an RBI.  

College of the Desert baseball travels to Victor Valley Tuesday afternoon for a 2 p.m. Foothill Conference matchup.
