Baseball Explodes for 25 Runs in Foothill Thrashing of Barstow

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- College of the Desert baseball (7-15, 5-7) racked up 23 hits en route to a 25-8 triumph over visiting Barstow (9-13, 7-5) in Saturday's Foothill Conference matchup in Palm Desert.

Down 8-3 and with two outs in the home-half of the sixth inning, a wild pitch that plated their fourth run gave the Roadrunners some life on offense.  Sophomore Bobby Hoisington (Battleground, WA/Battleground HS) followed with a single to left field, which scored two more runs and cut the deficit to just 8-6.  Sophomore Sean Romo (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS) then legged out an infield single, which, coupled with an error, allowed COD to tie the game at 8-8.

After a quick top of the seventh, a walk and  two singles from sophomores DJ Hernandez (La Quinta, CA/La Quinta HS) and Luc Powers-Hubbard (Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) loaded the bases with nobody out.  Sophomore Cole Danielson (Cathedral City, CA/Cathedral City HS) then crushed a three-RBI triple to right-center, giving head coach John Welker's squad an 11-8 advantage.  Three more runs would come across on hits from freshman Trenton Covel (Palm Desert, CA/Palm Desert HS) and sophomore Dallas Asuncion (Honolulu, HI/Kalani HS), with the Roadrunners' plating two more on a wild pitch and RBI-single from freshman Travis Tanaka (Honoulu, HI/St. Louis HS).

Desert would go on to score nine more runs in the game's eighth inning, cruising to their 25-8 victory.

Sean Romo and Luc Powers-Hubbard each collected four hits on the afternoon, while Cole Danielson lead the offense with five RBIs.  Sophomore Tanner Olthoff (Oceanside, CA/El Camino HS) went 2-6 with three RBIs, while Dallas Asuncion had three hits and three RBIs.  Bobby Hosington, Sean Romo and Trenton Covel each drove in two runs, with Travis Tanaka, DJ Hernandez, Luc Powers-Hubbard and freshman Isaiah Kinder (Yucca Valley, CA/Yucca Valley HS) adding an RBI each.

Freshman right-hander Jake Patterson (Palm Desert, CA/Palm Desert HS) earned the win for COD, pitching 5.2 innings of relief.  Patterson (3-4) allowed just one run on six hits, while striking out two.

College of the Desert baseball will be back in action this Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Cerro Coso for a 2:30 p.m. Foothill Conference game.
