COD Baseball opens Conference play with a close loss to the Jaguars, 2-0

COD (2-15; 0-1) opened up Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play and while they received 7 strikeouts from their starting pitcher, they couldn't get a run across against the Southwestern Jaguars (11-5; 1-0), falling 2-0.

Desert freshman starting right handed pitcher Robin Landazuri (Redlands H.S.) tossed a complete game, surrendering two runs, both earned, on seven hits, walking two and striking out seven in the loss. Sophomore left fielder Jason Nall (Playa del Rey St. Bernard) led the way for the Roadrunners, going 2 for 3 in the game.

The Roadrunners would get runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the first, but a ground out and a pop out ended the threat. In the bottom of the third, Desert had runners on second and third with two outs, ending the inning on a ground out to the pitcher.

The Jaguars opened up the scoring in the top of the fifth and then added another run in the top half of the seventh to make the score 2-0.

Desert would put a runner on third base a final time in the game in the bottom of the seventh, when Nall hit a one out double to right and reached third base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore center fielder Travis Tanaka (Honolulu (HI) St. Louis). Unfortunately, a pop out to right field ended the threat.
