COD Baseball struggles in rubber match with the Wolverines, 12-2

COD (7-18; 5-4) struggled in their Saturday home matinee match against the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (6-20; 5-7), 12-2.

The big blow in the game happened in the top of the fifth, as the Wolverines put the game out of reach with six runs in the inning, taking a 9-0 lead. Desert would put across a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth in the loss.

Sophomore left fielder Jason Nall (Playa del Rey St. Bernard) and freshman first baseman Quinton Bidon (Enumclaw, WA) each added runs batted in and sophomore short stop Dominic Velasquez (Palm Desert Xavier Prep) had a stolen base on the afternoon.

San Bernardino Valley would get on the board first when they received a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the second, giving the Wolverines the early 1-0 lead. They added a second run in the top of the third when a single to center scored a run and in the top of the fourth, SBVC added a third run when a runner scored on a fielder's choice. The Wolverines would add six more runs in the top of the fifth, giving the visitors a 9-0 lead.

The Roadrunners would finally get some good luck and bust up the shutout when sophomore right fielder Trenton Covel (Palm Desert Xavier Prep) opened up the inning with a hit-by-pitch advancing to second base on a walk by freshman designated hitter Julian Gonzalez (Palm Springs H.S.). Both runners would advance a base on a balk and Bidon would bring home Covel on a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

In the bottom of the eighth, Desert would again score as Velasquez led off the inning with a walk, then stole second base, reaching third base on a ground out to second. Velasquez would head home on a single to center by Nall.
