COD Baseball closes out 2017 with loss to #11 Griffins, 7-1

COD (10-30; 8-16) struggled to get runners on base as the #11 El Cajon Grossmont Griffins (29-7-1; 22-2) struck out 13 Roadrunners and Desert wrapped up the 2017 season with Sophomore Day, falling to the Griffins, 7-1.

The Roadrunners honored their 2017 Sophomore class with a pregame ceremony, as all six Sophomore players either started or appeared in today's contest. 

Sophomore right handed pitcher John Carlile (Santa Ana Foothill) had an impressive afternoon in relief, tossing three and two-thirds innings, striking out six batters, walking three and giving up one run, which was earned, on six hits. Sophomore right handed starting pitcher Riley Owen (Tumwater, WA) got the nod on his final game in a Roadrunners uniform and threw five and a third innings, scattering six runs, five earned, on nine hits, walking two and striking out one.

Sophomore catcher Travis Tanaka (Honolulu (HI) St. Louis) went 1 for 5 in the lead off role and sophomore first baseman Jason Nall (Playa del Rey St. Bernard) went 2 for 4 from the three hole.

Sophomore center fielder Trenton Covel (Palm Desert Xavier Prep) went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts at the plate and sophomore short stop Dominic Velasquez (Palm Desert Xavier Prep) went 1 for 2 out of the seven spot. 

Freshman third baseman Nicholas Follett (Toronto (ON) Bishop Allen Academy) went 2 for 4 and collected the only run batted in on the afternoon for the Roadrunners and freshman right fielder Austin Clifton (Romoland Heritage) scored the only run in the bottom of the eighth, going 1 for 4, hitting out of the two slot.
