COD Baseball falls twice in double header 18-0 & 8-7

COD (10-24; 7-11) found themselves on the wrong end of a four hit shutout in game one and made the visitors nervous with a three run outburst in the bottom of the ninth in game two, but fell a bit short against the San Diego City Knights (17-16; 9-9).

In game one, the Knights brought 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the top of the second inning. San Diego City would tack on two more runs in the top of the third, a run in the top of the fifth, two runs in the top of the sixth, a run in the top of the seventh, and a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Desert would be held to just four hits, two of which came off of the bat of sophomore third baseman Nick Follett (Toronto (ONT) Bishop Allen Academy), who went 2 for 5 on the afternoon.

In game two, the Roadrunners jumped out to an early one run lead, as Desert scored in the bottom of the first when freshman short stop Nathanael Tiaga (Indio Shadow Hills) scored on a single to left by freshman second baseman Nathaniel Lopez (Palm Desert H.S.).

San Diego City would add a run in the top of the second and a run in the top of the third inning, but the Roadrunners would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third as Follett crushed a home run to left field.

Desert would take a brief lead in the bottom of the fifth, when freshman center fielder Adam Lopez (La Quinta H.S.) darted home on wild pitch and Tiaga scored on a passed ball, to give the Roadrunners a 4-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the Knights would score four runs in the top of the sixth and two more runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Desert would plate three runs in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with only one out, as Adam Lopez scored and freshman first baseman Jonathan Mejia (Palm Desert H.S.) punished a single to left field, scoring Follett and freshman left fielder Joshua Hernandez (Palm Desert H.S.).

Next home game for College of the Desert Baseball will be Tuesday, April 17th at 2 p.m., where they will continue Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play by hosting the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles of San Jacinto. Hope to see you there.
