COD Football narrowly escapes the Corsairs, 46-45

COD (2-0) remained undefeated as the Roadrunners piled up over 600 yards of offense, over 400 yards in the air and escaped the clutches of the Santa Monica Corsairs (1-1), 46-45.

Desert first competed against the Corsairs in 1986 and hold a 5-2 overall record against them. The last these two teams met was in 2019 in Palm Desert, when the Roadrunners throttled Santa Monica in the second game of the season, 49-0. Desert holds a 2-2 record against the Corsairs in Palm Desert.

Freshman corner Myron West (North Las Vegas (NV) Legacy) tied for the lead on the Roadrunners with 10 total tackles including 3 solo tackles and a huge, momentum changing interception in the endzone midway through the second quarter. Sophomore defensive back Shyde Elam (Las Vegas (NV) Western) also had 10 total tackles including 3 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks of the quarterback and 2 quarterback hurries in the win. Sophomore linebacker Greyson Lafleur (Snohomish (WA) Glacier Peak) had 9 total tackles, 4 solo, grabbing 0.5 sack and a tackle for loss. Freshman defensive end Isaac Barranco (Palm Springs H.S.) also had 9 total tackles, 2 solo, with 1.5 sacks of the quarterback and a tackle for loss.

Freshman kicker Dylan Armendariz (Palm Springs H.S.) was perfect on the night, scoring 10 points, going a perfect 4 for 4 on extra points and 2 for 2 on field goal attempts, with his longest on the night a 39-yard attempt in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Brycen Blankenship (Monroe (WA) H.S.) led the way, connecting on 21 of 33 passes for a season high 389 yards and 3 scores. Freshman running back Kannin Boswell (Salina (UT) North Sevier) had 21 carries for 155 yards, 3 scores and a long of 58 yards. Freshman wide receiver Isaac Eberhardt (Glenvar Heights (FL) South Miami Senior) had 8 catches for 220 yards, 2 scores and a long of 70 yards and sophomore wide receiver Frankie Valentino (Cathedral City H.S.) had 6 catches for 136 yards and a score, with a long of 65 yards.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on September 16, when Desert hosts the Pasadena City Lancers. Desert first competed against the Lancers in 1992 and holds a 2-5 overall record against them. The last these two teams met was in 2022 in Palm Desert, when the Roadrunners grabbed a narrow victory in overtime over Pasadena City in the sixth game of the season, 34-27. Desert holds a 2-1 record against the Lancers in Palm Desert.
