COD Men's Soccer bests Mounties for 1st time since ‘79

COD (5-2-3) would convert a penalty kick in the 70th minute to secure the first win in the series, since these two teams met in 1979 and their first win on the road as the Roadrunners knocked off the Mt. San Antonio Mounties of Walnut (2-3-5), 2-1.

The Roadrunners played against Mt. San Antonio for the first time in program history in 1979 and hold a 2-6-1 overall record against the Mounties. Desert has a 1-4-1 record against the Mounties in Walnut.

The Mounties got onto the scoreboard first, in the 14th minute, but Desert would tie the score midway though the first half. Freshman defender Liam Keane (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman defender Aidan Brothers (La Quinta H.S.) would connect with sophomore forward Jose Calderon Jr. (Thermal Desert Mirage) to equalize in the 29th minute. The 1-1 tie would hold through halftime. Calderon, Jr. would score again in the 70th minute when he converted a penalty kick to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Luis Lucio (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) faced nine shots on goal making eight saves on the evening.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on the road at the Los Angeles Mission Eagles of Sylmar on October 29. The Roadrunners played against LA Mission for the first time in program history in 1993 and hold a 1-2-2 overall record against the Eagles. Desert has an 0-0-1 record against the Eagles in Sylmar. The next home game for the Roadrunners will be on October 6, when Desert hosts the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga. Desert first competed against the Panthers in 2002 and hold an 12-15-3 overall record against them. The Roadrunners hold an 8-5-2 record against the Panthers in Palm Desert.
