COD Men’s Soccer rolls in shut out of Rams, 4-0

COD (7-6-3; 2-2) grabbed their third clean sheet of the season, finishing the final 26 minutes with only 10-men, as the Roadrunners rolled to an easy win over the Victor Valley Rams of Victorville (2-11-2; 0-4), 4-0.

The Roadrunners played against Victor Valley for the first time in program history in 1989 and hold a 17-15-3 overall record against the Rams. The Roadrunners hold a 11-5-1 record against the Rams in Palm Desert.

Sophomore goal keeper Luis Lucio (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) started the contest, but received his second red card of the season in the 65th minute, leaving the Roadrunners with 10-men the remainder of the game and with a clean sheet on the line, the game was in the capable hands of freshman goal keeper Diego Esparza (Palm Desert H.S.).

Desert got onto the scoreboard first with a goal in the 16th minute, when sophomore forward Jose Calderon, Jr. (Thermal Desert Mirage) found sophomore defender Abraham Jasso (La Quinta H.S.) as he headed the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season and giving the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead. In injury time in the first half, freshman midfielder Adrian Medrano (Hemet H.S.) was on a breakaway, when he found freshman midfielder Christian Gonzalez (Indio Shadow Hills) in front of the Rams net to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead going into the break. In the 50th minute, Desert would score a third time off of a corner by freshman midfielder Osvaldo Ramos-Lugo (La Quinta H.S.), which found the head of the tallest player on the field, freshman defender Thijmen Lansing (Houten, Utrecht, NED). The Roadrunners would wrap up the scoring in the 61st minute as Calderon, Jr. connected on a set piece from about 40 yards out, giving the home side a 4-0 advantage.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on the road at the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga on October 24. The Roadrunners played against Chaffey for the first time in program history in 2002 and hold a 13-15-3 overall record against the Panthers after defeating Chaffey in Palm Desert on October 6th, 2-1. Desert has an 4-10-1 record against the Panthers in Rancho Cucamonga. The next home game for the Roadrunners will be on Sophomore Day, October 27, when Desert hosts the Norco Mustangs. Desert first competed against Norco in 2012 and hold an 6-5-1 overall record against them after falling to the Mustangs in Norco on October 10th, 5-1. The Roadrunners hold a 5-0 record against the Mustangs in Palm Desert.
