COD Men's Tennis sends 2 into Round of 32 at La Jolla

COD sent three doubles teams traveled to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club to participate in the 133rd Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, where the Roadrunners faced off with teams from UCLA, UNLV, San Diego State, Ball State, Stanford and Pepperdine.

In the Round of 128, freshman Marco Alvarez (Chula Vista Eastlake) and freshman Matthew Shaw (Beverly Hills GED Testing Online) faced off with the eventual tournament champions, the top doubles team from the University of California Los Angeles, falling to the Bruins, 4-1 and 4-1.

In the Round of 128, freshman Eita Ishikawa (Yokkaichi (JPN) Technical) and freshman Jiaxi Ma (Irvine Woodbridge) opened up with the number three team from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The Roadrunners dropped the first set, 4-2, fought back to tie the match at 5-3, then found themselves down, 7-3 in extras and then rattled off six straight points to win the set and the match 9-7.

In the Round of 64, the Roadrunners doubles team of Ishikawa and Ma found themselves in a similar hole as the previous round, but this time against the #9 ranked team in their bracket. They dropped the first set (5-4), rebounded to tie at 5-3 in the second and then came from behind to win the extra set and the match 7-3.

In the Round of 32, the Roadrunners doubles team of Ishikawa and Ma faced off with the top seed in their bracket, falling to the top doubles team from Stanford in straight sets, 4-1 and 5-3.

In the Round of 128, freshman Elijah Strode (San Diego Heritage Christian) and freshman Raymundo Chavez (Ensenada (MX) CBT is 41) opened up with the #16 ranked team in their bracket, a pair of coaches from UCLA, defeating the Bruins in straight sets, 4-2 and 4-2.

In the Round of 64, the Roadrunners doubles team of Strode and Chavez faced off with an unranked team from Ball State in Indiana, defeating the Cardinals in straight sets, 4-2 and 4-0.

In the Round of 32, the Roadrunners doubles team of Strode and Chavez faced off with the #5 seed in their bracket, falling to the top doubles team from Pepperdine in straight sets, 5-3 and 4-2.
