Softball Opens Season With 7-2 Setback Against Imperial Valley

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Sophomore outfielder Brianna Alcorn (Indio HS) hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, but it wasn't enough as College of the Desert (0-1) softball fell 7-2 to visiting Imperial Valley (1-0) on Wednesday afternoon in Palm Desert.

In the Lady Roadrunners first contest of the 2016 season, they trailed just 3-2 entering the sixth inning behind Alcorn's home run and an RBI single from freshman catcher Darbie Catalfamo (Shadow Hills HS).  However, three runs in the top of the inning pushed Imperial Valley in front comfortably, dealing COD their first defeat.

Sophomore utility Amanda Martinez (Indio HS) and freshman outfielder Marlene Paniagua (Indio HS) each collected one hit for the Lady Roadrunners, freshman right-hander Angelika Cabanyog (Shadow Hills HS) struck out one over her five innings of duty.

College of the Desert will be back in action this wekeend, as they host Mt. San Jacinto on Sunday afternoon in a pair of games.  First pitch of the double-header is set for 11 a.m.
