Softball Comes Up Short in 3-1 Loss to Foothill-Leading Chaffey

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- College of the Desert softball (6-22-1, 2-8) nearly missed upsetting the Foothill Conference leader, as they fell 3-1 to visiting Chaffey (24-1-1, 9-1) yesterday afternoon in Palm Desert.

Through five innings, freshman Angelika Cabanyog (Shadow Hills HS) shut down the Chaffey bats, keeping the game scoreless.  In the top of the sixth, however, the Foothil leader broke through, scoring three runs.

The Lady Roadrunners would then answer back in their half of the sixth, when a ground ball by sophomore Amanda Martinez (Indio HS) plated Angelika Cabanyog.  Cabanyog, who reached via a single through the left side, would be the lone run for COD, as their comeback fell short.

Sophomore Liz Moreno (Desert Hot Springs HS) and Angelika Cabanyog led the Lady Roadrunners with two hits apiece, while sophomore Brianna Alcorn (Indio HS) and freshman Darbie Catalfamo (Shadow Hills) each had one hit.  Cabanyog (2-11) suffered the loss on the mound for COD, allowing just the three runs on nine hits. She struck out five while walking two.

College of the Desert softball will be back home this Friday afternoon for a pair of Foothill Conference games against Barstow.  First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
