COD Softball struggles in 5 inning loss to the Olympians, 13-1

COD (2-12; 0-2) kept the game close for the first couple of innings, but a four run third and a seven run fourth by the San Diego Mesa Olympians (5-7; 2-1) doomed the home team in five innings, 13-1.

Sophomore catcher Darbie Catalfamo (Indio Shadow Hills) led the way for the Roadrunners, going 2 for 2 and scoring the lone run for Desert in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore center fielder Malissa Nielsen (Palm Desert H.S.) and freshman left fielder Arlene Santana (Indio H.S.) both clobbered doubles in the game, with Santana securing a run batted in.

Sophomore right handed starting pitcher Yizel Nunez (Beaumont H.S.) tossed three complete innings, surrendering 10 runs all earned on 11 hits, walking three and striking out one in her fourth loss of the season. Freshman right handed relief pitcher Lexie Jackson (La Quinta H.S.) tossed two innings, surrendering three runs, one earned, on two hits, walking four on the afternoon.

The Olympians would score first, adding a run in the top of the first and the second innings. Mesa would plate four more runs in the top of the third and seven runs in the top of the fourth, putting Desert in an 13-0 hole as they rolled into the bottom of the fourth.

Catalfamo led off the inning with a single to left and was immediately followed up with a double to center which chased the Olympians outfielder all the way to the wall, giving Catalfamo just enough time to scamper home from first.
