COD Softball splits double header at Cougars, 7-5 & 13-5

COD (2-7) took the 4-hour drive north on the 5 Freeway to play a hard-fought game one and then grab a lopsided win in game two, as the Roadrunners collected a road split at the Taft Cougars (1-7), 7-5 and 13-5.

The Roadrunners played against the Taft Cougars for the first time in program history in 1997 and hold a 7-5 overall record against the Cougars. Desert had never played a series at Taft prior to this trip, but now the Roadrunners hold a 1-1 record against the Cougars at Taft. The loss in game one was the first victory of the 2024 season for Taft.

In game two, freshman right-handed starting pitcher Victoria Talamantes (La Quinta H.S.) was amazing at the plate and in the circle, going a perfect 5 for 5 with a double, 2 runs scored and a run batted in and tossing a complete game with 7 strike outs for her first win of the season. Freshman first baseman Arissa Gonzalez (Thermal Coachella Valley) was also a perfect 5 for 5 with 2 runs scored and freshman second baseman Kayla Vasquez (Indio Shadow Hills) went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBIs. Freshman catcher Jaylene Ramos (Yucca Valley H.S.) went 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and freshman shortstop Rebecca Perez (Palm Springs H.S.) went 1 for 4 with 3 runs scored.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be at the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park on Friday, March 8th. The Roadrunners first competed against East Los Angeles in 1993 and hold a 17-6 overall record against them. Desert has a 6-2 record against the Huskies in Monterey Park. The next home game for Desert will be in three weeks, to be played on Saturday, March 16th at 12p & 2:30p when the Roadrunners host the Glendale Vaqueros for a double header. The Roadrunners first played against Glendale in 1991 and have an overall record of 11-6 against the Vaqueros and a 4-3 record at home. Desert is currently on a 5-game winning streak over the Vaqueros dating back to 2019.
