COD Women’s Basketball upset special falls short against Spartans, 76-73

COD (4-18; 1-4) had a dynamite first half, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Mercades Young to get the Roadrunners to within one, 41-40 at the break, but the Oceanside MiraCosta Spartans (9-13; 3-2) locked down in the second half and the home side lost a close game, 76-73.

While Desert dominated in the paint, scoring 42 points, compared to the Spartans 30 points, but the Roadrunners were hurt by points off of turnovers, only scoring five points, compared to the Spartans 30 points.

Young, the freshman starting guard from Moreno Valley Vista Del Lago, scored 21 of her 28 points in the first half, going an impressive 12 of 15 from the field and shooting 2 of 3 from three-point range.

Sophomore starting forward Lexie Jackson (La Quinta H.S.) had a double-double in the first half, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 boards, wrapping up the afternoon with 17 points on 7 of 17 shooting and collecting 15 total boards, giving her an 8th double-double of the season. Jackson also led the team with five steals and added four more blocks to her already impressive 2016-17 season, giving her 52 on the season, good enough for 7th place.

Sophomore starting forward Jerrica Perez (Indio Shadow Hills) contributed 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting on the afternoon.
