COD Women’s Basketball looks for positives in loss to Griffins, 76-60

COD (4-19) had four of their five starters scoring in the double digits as Lexie Jackson led the way for the Roadrunners with her 9th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 boards, as Desert fell to the Grossmont Griffins (9-13), 76-60.

Desert fell in the first quarter 18-5, but got back up, dusted themselves off and punched back against the Griffins, winning the quarter and almost taking a halftime lead, 37-29. The second half proved to be a bit too much for the Roadrunners as they struggled in the third quarter and came back a bit in the fourth, winning the fourth quarter 19-14.

Jackson, the sophomore starting forward from La Quinta, scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half and also added three more blocked shots to her overall season total of 55, which ties her for sixth in the state, along with going a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line.

Freshman starting guard Mercades Young (Moreno Valley Vista Del Lago) added 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting and both sophomore starting forward Jerrica Perez (Indio Shadow Hills) and freshman starting guard Jada Toland (Indio Shadow Hills) scored 11 points each and each player had four assists and two steals each, leading the team in those categories. Perez went 4 for 14 on the night, shooting 2 of 9 from three-point range and Toland went 3 for 7 from the field and was 4 of 6 from the charity stripe on the night.
