COD Women’s Soccer takes a frustrating tie against the Griffins, 1-1

COD (7-7-2) played to a shooting match tie, as both teams combined for over 50 total shots and almost 30 shots on goal, but only two of those shots found the back of the net, pulling a draw out of the El Cajon Grossmont Griffins (6-7-1), 1-1.

COD ended up a little knocked around throughout the game as sophomore starting goal keeper Britney Vargas (La Quinta H.S.), who had made seven saves up to that point, was taken out of the game in the 34th minute after a collision in front of the net. She would be replaced by sophomore defender Alexis Wright (Palm Desert H.S.) who made three huge saves in her 13:57 in net. In the 48th minute, Vargas would return to the field, passing all proper training protocols and made seven more saves on the afternoon, for a total of 14 saves.

The shot totals in the first half were incredible as Desert grabbed 17 shots and Grossmont had 12, with the Roadrunners being the most accurate in the first half, making nine shots on goal, compared to the Griffins eight. Regardless of effort, neither team could find the back of the net, both squads would go into the break, tied at 0-0.

The second half was more of the same aggressive offensive style and at 70:24 the Roadrunners would break through as freshman midfielder Galilea Cortes (Indio H.S.) lifted a pass right to "The Assassin" freshman midfielder Melita Pena (La Quinta H.S.) who buried her tenth goal of the season, giving Desert a 1-0 lead.

Less than, three minutes later, the Griffins would equalize, tying the game at 1-1. The Roadrunners would not stop their assault as they would take 12 more shots in the second half, seven of those shots were on target, causing the Grossmont keeper to stay on her toes.
