COD (2-11) grabbed a hard fought win, on the road, at the San Diego City Knights (5-7-2), 4-1, as Maira Fuentes and Analise Anzaldua each had a goal and an assist on the afternoon.
The Roadrunners scored two goals in the first half and two in the second half as sophomore starting goal keeper Maranda Palmer (Twentynine Palms H.S.) made nine saves.
Desert got things started in the 22nd minute as freshman midfielder Maira Fuentes (Thermal Desert Mirage) pushed a pass towards the middle of the goal mouth and freshman forward Jianna Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) powered a shot past the outstretched hands of the Knights keeper to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead.
Just before halftime, Fuentes made an appearance again in front of the net and took the opportunity herself to rifle a shot past the keeper into the upper left hand corner of the net to give the visiting roadrunners a 2-0 lead.
The Knights would get on the board in the 61st minute, but the Roadrunners would get that goal back in the 73rd minute, when sophomore midfielder Analise Anzaldua (Indio H.S.) used a free kick to find sophomore midfielder Vanessa Caudillo (Indio Shadow Hills) in front of the net who headed the ball up over the keeper to give Desert a 3-1 lead.
In the 89th minute, Anzaldua took a long run down the left side of the field and from about 20 yards out just punished a shot towards the net, leaving the Knights keeper to punch the ball down, but the rotation on the ball caused it to sneak into the net for a great goal.
