COD Women’s Soccer falls to Jaguars, 7-2

COD (2-12) was led by Melita Pena, who scored both goals, and Taylor Doyle, who had both assists for the Roadrunners, as they fell at home to the Chula Vista Southwestern Jaguars (13-0-2), 7-2.

The Roadrunners played a hard fought game, but the Jaguars would build up a five goal lead in the first half, at which time sophomore starting goal keeper Maranda Palmer (Twentynine Palms H.S.) was pulled for freshman goal keeper Maira Fuentes (Thermal Desert Mirage). Palmer faced 19 total shots, making six saves of 11 total shots on goal, she would return to the field later in the game as a midfielder, but Fuentes was under fire immediately. Fuentes would face a similar assault, seeing 17 shots taken against her and making five saves on seven shots on goal.

In the 50th minute, the LQHS connection met for the first of two goals for the Roadrunners on the afternoon as freshman defender Taylor Doyle (La Quinta H.S.) ran up the right side of the field and found sophomore forward Melita Pena (La Quinta H.S.) near the net. After Pena dribbled left she turned and rocked a shot over the left shoulder of the keeper to get Desert on the scoreboard.

Southwestern would add two more goals in the 67th and 76th minutes, but Desert was not done as in an almost identical goal scoring opportunity, Doyle ran up the right side, slicing her way past a couple of Jaguars defenders, lifted a pass to Pena, who went right, spun left and absolutely pounded a shot under the dive of the Southwestern keeper.
