COD Women’s Soccer shoots down the Jets, 7-0

COD (12-5) made the most of their rescheduled contest with their former Conference foes, as six different players scored and the Roadrunners shot down the Miramar Jets of San Diego (1-12), 7-0.

Desert reached their 12th win for the first time since 1999, taking a total of 55 shots, 28 in the first half alone, with the Jets making 17 total saves, nine in the first half and the Roadrunners would take 13 total corner kicks with eight in the first half.

The Roadrunners first played San Diego Miramar in 2008 and have an 3-7-1 record against the Jets, including 2-3 record in Palm Desert.  Prior to today, the last time Desert defeated the Jets was in 2018, by a score of 1-0 in Palm Desert.

The Roadrunners would find the back of the net in the 17th minute as freshman midfielder Zaynah Cortez (Palm Springs H.S.) converted a corner kick into a goal, as sophomore midfielder Denise Hernandez (Palm Springs H.S.) headed the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the season, giving Desert a 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, Desert would score again, this time mid goal box on a pass by freshman forward Yisel Ybarra (Thermal Desert Mirage) to freshman defender Britny Gutierrez (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) for Gutierrez's second goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage.

Moments later, a deflection off of the Miramar keeper, gave freshman forward Leeanna Navarro (Thermal Coachella Valley) a point blank shot in front of an open net and she poked it in for her first goal of the season, giving Desert a 3-0 lead, which they would hold onto going into halftime.

In the early minutes of the second half, freshman midfielder Eva Lupita Torres (Thermal Coachella Valley) pushed an easy pass to sophomore midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) who clobbered a shot from about 35 yards out, scoring as the ball carried into the upper left corner of the net, to give Desert a 4-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, Murguia found team goals leader, sophomore forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills), in the middle of the goal box and Castillo scored her 14th of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 5-0 lead.

In the 65th minute, Castillo would score again, this time on an assist from sophomore midfielder Isabel Alvarez (Indio Shadow Hills), plopping a goal in the lower left corner and giving Desert a 6-0 lead.

In the 75th minute, Ybarra scored her third goal of the season on a breakout right in the goal box, thanks to an assist by freshman midfielder Jasmine Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley).

The next home game for Desert is on Friday, October 29th against the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles. The Roadrunners first played Mt. San Jacinto in 1997 and have an 7-26-6 record against the Eagles, including 5-14-1 record in Palm Desert.
